Controversy - only one rider from each country allowed to compete

[edit]

According to various commentators on TV in the UK, at the previous Olympics each team could have two riders for individual events, but because Britain were so dominant the governing body for cycling reduced the amount to one - hence Chris Hoy isn't riding in the individual and can't defend his title (he's been replaced by Kenny). This should be added by someone who knows the full details. Malick78 (talk) 16:25, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There's a certain amount of grumbling about this, but I doubt the official reason was ever because of the success of the GB team in 2008. Even if it's controversy, it needs to be sourced from reliable sources (not just people grumbling on Twitter, of which there has been loads). SeveroTC 21:16, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not on Twitter - I know about it from the TV. I hoped someone might have read something in a paper or on the net. Bearing in mind that Britain won 7 out of 8 golds in Beijing, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the authorities would change things to even things up. One TV commentator on Eurosport compared the situation to athletics - would they tell the Jamaicans to just enter 1 competitor for the 100m? Of course not. There'd be an outcry. Yet, cycling did it before GB's home Olympics. Malick78 (talk) 17:07, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is beyond the realms of probability that a governing body would alter competition rules to harm just one nation. It could be written that various people (named and, ideally, written sources) speculated that it was to even things up, but a source with some inside knowledge to explicitly say it would be worth it's weight in gold. Some sports are well run, others are run by dicks (heard of FIFA?). Cycling seems to be the latter. This article from the Telegraph sums it up perfectly, and reflects exactly what I heard the commentator on Eurosport saying.Malick78 (talk) 14:16, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Triathalon

[edit]

Is the Triathlon not a cycling event? I realise it includes swimming and a foot race, but the cycle discipline if the furthest distance. Jim Sweeney (talk) 18:41, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, triathlon is recognised as a different sport by the IOC and has a different governing body. SeveroTC 22:09, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Competition schedule

[edit]

I realise someone's got to a lot of work to create this setion, but now that it's over, do we really need the section 'Competition schedule'? Historically speaking, it's nothing more than trivia and unnessary in the article.MTB UK (talk) 22:01, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
